Sankt Johann/Alpendorf: Mountains, skiing and fairy-tale landscapes
This resort, just like most of the ones in Austria – with amazing infrastructure and well-prepared routes, ski schools for both kids and adults, with trails for cross-country skiing and routes for ski-alpinism and snowshoe treks.
The resort’s highlight is the outstanding beauty of its landscapes. Amazing views open up in front of you from the upper-most cable-car stations of the neighbouring Hochkönig and Tennengebirge mountain chains.
“Sankt Johann and its Alpendorf” – this is the form in which you’ll often find the name of the place in a lot of printed tourist literature. Austria has more than one Sankt Johann, which is why the name of the town is often followed by a description of the region it is in. In this case it is Sankt Johann im Pongau, because it is in the Pongau region (in the State of Salzburg). Alpendorf is a small village, which literally hangs down over Sankt Johann – it’s about 300 metres further up (a couple of minutes by car, around 3 km by road).
During the winter season, ski-buses regularly travel from Sankt Johann and the neighbouring localities (Schwarzach and Bischofshofen) to Alpendorf, which are carrying happy skiers and many others who have come to delight in this beautiful place.
Whenever there has been a lot of snow, Alpendorf turns into a snow-white kingdom, which offers its guests truly breath-taking views. Although the resort may not have a large range of routes, it can boast of the surrounding views. Although you couldn’t call skiing at the resort boring – along with both of the neighbouring resorts of Wagrain and Flachau, Alpendorf forms a “skiing swing”. In other words, once you’ve starting skiing at one of these three resorts on one ski-pass, you can go to the other two without even taking your skis off. They are all connection by ski-routes and ski-lifts.
Alpendorf is a resort that absolutely everyone will enjoy. It has something for both little and adult visitors, as well as both novices and professionals alike. There are ski schools here for kids and even a skiing nursery where children from the age of one to three are looked after when their parents are off skiing. There are four fast slopes, parks with a variety of different figures and obstacles, as well as a snowboard park and kids’ mini-club.
For those of you that don’t ski, Alpendorf offers pre-made cross-country skiing routes and a large number of interesting routes for snowshoe treks.
The drop on the Sankt Johann/Alpendorf measures 650-1850 metres. In the winter season, whatever the weather (and the temperature is even sometimes in the pluses) you’ll definitely be able to find snow here thanks to the snow cannons and snow machines.
A couple more words on the resort. It is part of one of the largest skiing networks in Austria – Ski Amadé. Alpendorf is one of the network’s 25 resorts. Although we’ve only been round a few of them I can already recommend this resort as one of the best from amongst them.
The average skiing season at the resort stretches from December to the middle of April. You can find information on ski-pass tariffs and the length of the season in the section Information» below.
