Liechtenstein Gorge (Liechtensteinklamm), Austria

This is the longest and deepest gorge in the Alps, as well as the most picturesque and idyllic. It is place where rainbows are born, where the force of water is more powerful than that of the mighty rock. It is where nature is stronger than fantasy.

Liechtensteinklamm Liechtenstein Gorge

Liechtenstein Gorge rightly deserves the best epithet and the highest praise possible and it is well known far from Austria’s borders.
So what exactly is the gorge?

Gruyères, both a traditional cheese and a historic region

The name Gruyères is synonymous with the historic Swiss region in the Canton of Fribourg, its village namesake, from which it originates, the ancient castle as well as the well-known Swiss cheese.

Gruyère / Gruyères

We weren’t originally planning on visiting the cheese makers and the village, but after we got hold of a caquelon (fondue pot), we felt compelled to get some fondue cheese. Since Gruyères cheese is one of the fundamental ingredients of this traditional Swiss dish, we decided to check out the village and the cheese factory.

Chillon Castle. Switzerland

On a particularly warm and sunny day during our winter holidays we decided to travel along the shores of Lake Geneva and visit the small, lakeside towns. When we started to get closer to the town of Montreux we noticed a signpost to an ancient castle and decided to change our route. As it turned out, it was well worth it.

Sölden. Giggijoch Mountain

Today I’m going to write about one of the summits in the famous town of Sölden, which is said to be the heart of the Alps. Snow lies on the ground for most of the year and sun is blindingly bright. It’s never boring in Sölden and the scenery just takes your breath away.

Solden / Sölden / Soelden / Giggijoch / Giggijochbahn

You can get up from Sölden to the ski slopes by taking two ski-lifts, the Giggijochbahn and the Geislachkogelbahn. There’re both found at opposite ends of Dorfstraße, the town’s central street.

Freizeit Arena Sölden. Fun for all the family

When we were planning our first trip to a ski resort with our son, my husband wasn’t just thinking about the presence of snow and slopes but also about having fun with our one-year old. In Sölden, which is where we decided to go in the end, there weren’t just children’s play areas but there was also a great place for the whole family to kick back and relax, the Freizeit Arena Sölden, an entertainment complex.

Tirol Castle, Italy

Every person who has been to Austria at least once recalls the name of one of the most Alpinesque of lands, Tirol. There are very few who know, however, that it’s the castle that gave its name to the land, which for historical reasons now finds itself in the Italian Autonomous Province of Bolzano (South Tirol).

Tirol Castle

The castle is truly impressive. Built on a sheer rock face, it seems inaccessible. We only got as far as the Commune of Tirol by car and had to continue the rest of the long journey to the castle by foot.

Bolzano / Bozen
